Intercostal Muscle Strain--I think

So I’m doing decline bench yesterday after having done six wicked sets of cable push downs. I’m pushing 275 and trying to do 5x5, but it ain’t going so well, so I’m straining to do 3 or 4 and only got 5 reps in one set. Each of the others, I went all the way to failure and had to rack the bar low (this is on a Smith) and wiggle out from under it. When doing so, something popped and moved on or under my right rib cage and immediately hurt like a mother. So I abort the workout (ugh), eat, and ultimately have to take 800mg of Advil to sleep. I take my HGH and get a good eight hours, after which I think, ok, I’m good.

NOPE. Just getting out of bed replicated the same experience. Any time I tighten my core and move, I ultimately feel a pop and pain. (Unfortunately, as I now know, this includes having sex.) The pain is right on the top edge of my right rib cage and is sensitive to the touch. From reading, I gather I have an intercostal muscle strain that should go away in 3-4 days alternating ice with heat.

Anyone with experience with this type of injury? Think my diagnosis is accurate? Thoughts welcome.

Didn’t happen while under weight. Happened when I twisted out from under the bar!

This was a heavy work set day (for me), i.e., weight is what I can rep five times at most. I do plenty of days at 75% of 1RM lifting.

I’m shopping for a new chiro now. The one I liked left for some research thing and the owner came back and I don’t like him.

Got one lined up. Got to work it into my schedule.

Thanks, guys. I taped it up tightly, and that seems to help. The skin on top of the area is all puffy, so there’s something going on there. Chiro sounds like a good idea.

Yessir. Happens to me quite often on pull overs. Why I stopped doing them. 😂 tgat pop when it’s put back in place is like Heaven. I mean like instant relief.

Yep. Same thing. Fucking hurts. I would bend backwards on a chair to get it to “pop”. Was such a good feeling. 😅
